Integrate Subject Guides

Library & Research Tool

The Library has launched a new tool so you can add the Library’s Subject Guides and Citation Guides directly to your Blackboard courses. The relevant guides will appear based on your course’s subject(s). It is called the Library & Research tool.

You can opt-in to this feature for Winter 2021. In Fall 2021, Library & Research will automatically be added to your course navigation.

What will this look like?

Instructor adds Library & Research tool to course navigation:

Student clicks on Library & Research, results automagically display Library resources related to Education:

How do I add this to my course?

There are two ways to integrate Library resources; they can be integrated into the course navigation and into the content area.

Link e-Resources in Blackboard

Why Use Permalinks

  • Most publishers do not allow uploading PDFs into Blackboard. Instead, use permalinks for the Library's licensed databases for articles, e-books, and streaming videos.
  • Using permalinks:
    • Saves space on Blackboard's servers.
    • Gives the Library statistics on resource usage
    • Introduces students to what databases look like and do (via a “database-view” of the article).

Finding Permalinks

  • Permanent URLs may also be called "permanent links", "persistent links", "permalinks" or "stable links". For most eResources, the URL in a web browser's address bar is not a permanent link.
  • Find the eResource you wish to link to, then copy the permalink for inclusion in your course. Find permalinks for:

Ensuring Off-campus Access

  • To ensure your link will work off-campus, prepend it with the following URL if it is not already included: https://ezproxy.ardc.talonline.ca/login?url=
  • Your final URL should look similar to this (with no spaces or line breaks): https://ezproxy.ardc.talonline.ca/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=a9h&AN=48982605&site=ehost-live
  • On-campus the resource will open directly. Off-campus, students will be prompted to login with their 13-digit Library Barcode Number and PIN. Suggested wording to include in your course:
To access Library resources (articles, ebooks, streaming videos) from off-campus, enter your 13-digit iCard barcode number and your NEOS PIN when prompted. Get help with your barcode or PIN.

Adding Permalinks to Blackboard

  • Select the option "Open in New Window" to ensure the eResource opens outside of Blackboard.
  • Include a full citation for the resource. This will ensure that if the link breaks, students will be able to look up the resource outside of Blackboard.
  • Switch to Student View Mode and test your links in Blackboard.
  • Add Links in Blackboard - Show Me!

Cite & Attribute e-Resources

Include a full citation for any e-resources included in your Blackboard course:

  • This ensures that if the link breaks, students will be able to look up the resource outside of Blackboard.
  • For information and examples, visit Citing & Attributing Works on the Copyright Guide.

If you have questions about linking eResources, or experience difficulty getting the linking to work properly, please Ask Us!
