Blackboard @ RDC

This guide will help you use Blackboard for your courses.

What is SafeAssign?

SafeAssign is a plagiarism prevention tool that is freely available in Blackboard.

If your instructor uses SafeAssign, they will create a place to upload your assignment.

SafeAssign will then check your assignment for plagiarism, comparing it against the following databases:

  • Internet (checks against documents available for public access)
  • ProQuest ABI/Inform Database (1,100+ publications from ’90s to present)
  • Institutional Database (contains all RDC assignments submitted to SafeAssign)
  • Global Reference Database (contains papers volunteered by students from Blackboard institutions to help prevent cross-institutional plagiarism).

SafeAssign will NOT check against RDC Library Article Databases.

As per the RDC Course Outline Guidebook (page 6), instructors are required to include a statement in the Course Outline informing students that “A plagiarism detection tool is used in this course.”

How do I submit SafeAssignments?

Your instructor may have set-up an assignment using SafeAssign. SafeAssignments are submitted directly through the Assignments Tool in Blackboard.

How do I interpret the SafeAssign Report?

Your instructor may have set-up SafeAssign to allow you to upload a draft of your paper.

SafeAssign will check your paper for plagiarism and provide a detailed report.

The SafeAssign Report identifies matches found between your submitted paper and existing sources. The SafeAssign Report identifies all matching blocks of text. It is your and your instructor's responsibility to investigate whether the matching text is properly referenced or not.

Here are step-by-step instructions on reading a SafeAssign Originality Report:

How can I prevent plagiarism?
